Now that Extell and Vornado have stopped fighting, it's clear why they began: Extell's Gary Barnett didn't want 220 Central Park South, which will rise 920 feet, to block views from his planned tower at 217 West 57th Street. So he tried to stop 220 CPS from happening by buying the lease to a parking garage that Vornado needed to demolish before it could build. But both developers put their big boy pants on and agreed to shift their towers so both will have park views. Vornado, who confirmed that Robert A.M. Stern will design 220 CPS, also had to pay Extell a whopping $194 million for the parking garage and development rights. [WSJ; previously]
