At a recent conference, industry people suggested that Harlem has a demand for 1,500 additional hotel rooms, despite new hotels coming to the Victoria Theater and the area around the Columbia University West Harlem expansion. One marketing firm president claims that, "The average hostel guest doesn't want to be in the middle of Manhattan. Harlem has this phenomenal mystique.
