Life On Liberty Island

New, 1 comment

There aren't many places of solitude in New York City, but for residents of Liberty Island, where a statue superintendent has lived with his family, peace and quite came as soon as the last ferry left. "Being a moody teenager, when I needed my space from everybody, I would walk around the island," said a former resident. "The statue would be all lit up, and it would be really beautiful." But Lady Liberty will soon be the only resident of her island. For decades, New Yorkers have lived beside her, but Hurricane Sandy wiped out the superintendent's house and the National Parks Service has no plans to rebuild. [NYT]
