Ridgewood Theater Condo Conversion Sounds Like Bad News

As expected, the landmarked, almost-a-century-old Ridgewood Theater will be converted in condos by its new owner, Bushburg Properties. According to an application on file with the Department of Buildings, spotted by WyckoffHeights, the mixed-use project will include commercial space, 40 residential units, and will roughly double the building's floor area by constructing new floors within the existing shell and adding a "minor vertical enlargement." And the bad news for preservationists doesn't end there, as the architect of record is Nataliya Donskoy, a disciple of the infamous Robert Scarano, who, in 2010, was responsible for this travesty of an addition to a Clinton Hill row house. That was more than three years ago, and perhaps Donskoy's approach to this project will be a bit subtler. But, then again, perhaps it won't—the conversion of the landmarked building was filed with the DOB as a new building application.
