The current record for a downtown co-op sale belongs to a co-op at 141 Prince Street, which Elie Tahari sold to computer company founder Ted Waitt for $27.5 million. But 141 Prince may soon find itself unseated from first place?at least if 383 Broadway's penthouse sells for its new asking price of $32 million. The Times describes the apartment as a "self-illuminating, Savant-powered 7,200-square-foot pleasure palace ripe for the ultraluxury market." The listing includes copious photos and epic brokerbabble, so we can judge for ourselves. Here's a brokerbabble expert:
The discreet elevator opens to a gracious wood-paneled entry leading to the expansive 65 x 40 foot living room featuring up-lit original cast-iron columns and ceilings that soar from 16 feet up to 22 feet under the light-infusing skylights. Massive windows facing south and west add even more light and create the perfect picture frame of the new Freedom Tower. A cavernous wood-burning fireplace is finished with polished Eramosa marble with a honed Cohare marble hearth. Adjoining the glamorous dining area is a 1,500-bottle glass-encased, climate controlled wine cellar including a Sub Zero fridge for wine and champagne. The Media room is unlike any other with plush, upholstered stadium seating, dramatic cove lighting and ultra-suede lined ceilings and walls to make viewing the large projection screen all the more pleasurable. This Cinema experience with its Dolby 10.1 Surround sound is but a small part of the extensive, fully integrated Savant A/V systems throughout the apartment. The apartment belongs to sculpture and "earthwork artist" Charles Ross. Ross was an early colonizer of Soho, moving to 80 Wooster Street in 1967. He has lived in 383 Broadway since 1973, in a much smaller space for most of the time. In 2006, Ross partnered with photographer Damion Berger to renovate the penthouse space. Berger and Ross bought the building's roof rights in 2011, allowing them to add an outdoor kitchen, covered patio, and synthetic grass to the rooftop space. There are smaller touches, too: Carrara marble and a built-in coffee maker in the kitchen, and silk carpeting in the master suite. Watch out, 141 Prince.
