With the mayoral candidates both in favor of ending the reign (get it?) of New York City's carriage horses, Christopher Gray's Streetscapes column takes a look back at the history of ponies in our midst, from the more industrial workhorses to those that were mere playthings of the Upper East Siders. Many older architectural details around the city, in fact, were designed to provide watering holes for the weary equines. Even if the horses are banned, public basins, fountains, and troughs citywide will remain as a testament to their place in urban legend. [NYT]
