One under-construction Staten Island parkFreshkills, our favorite landfill-turned-green spacejust got the city's biggest array of solar panels. On the flip side, more than half (260 acres, to be precise) of Staten Island's similarly named Great Kills Park has been found to have dangerous levels of radiation and is currently closed off to the public so cleanup efforts can begin. It could take years, officials say, but meanwhile some swaths of Great Kills that have been deemed safe remain open. Yay? [NYT; photo via NYC Parks]
