Despite longstanding opposition, the City Council recently okayed two massive, controversial projects in Brooklyn: the Greenpoint Landing "mini-neighborhood" and the redevelopment of the Rheingold Brewery. More surprising, however, were the announcements that both projects would offer a slew of affordable housing provisions not featured in earlier proposals. In Bushwick, these include 50 percent more affordable housing units (including senior-specific) than initially promised, $250,000 to an anti-displacement fund for priced out residents, and $360,000 to area public schools. In Greenpoint, developers are offering $500,000 to an anti-displacement fund and $3 million to neighboring Newtown Barge Park. [DNAinfo]
