A group of Astoria residents are trying to show some love for the Hell Gate Bridge—the occasionally forgotten, "unwanted stepchild" of NYC bridges. Antonio Meloni—a spokesman for the non-profit New York Anti-Crime Agency and a local civic leader—is trying to get lights installed along the span of the Hell Gate, which he says would help mark the bridge more clearly for airplanes and helicopters and also showcase and honor the local landmark, since it has remained dark for virtually its entire existence. Indeed, the only aesthetic improvement in its 97-year history was when it was repainted in 1991. [DNAinfo]
