Last month, a Lower East Side synagogue announced plans to demolish itself and be rebuilt as condos. Now, the 167-year-old Church of the Ascension in Greenpoint is pulling the same stunt, having entered contract with a developer who plans to turn the top two floors of the parish hall into apartments. According to the pastor, "It's not doable for small churches to survive on the contributions of their congregants anymore." Are church/condos the way of the future? [DNAinfo, via Brownstoner]
