Subway Spies

New, 8 comments

In 2011, videographer Rebecca Davis began using her iPhone camera to take surreptitious pictures of fellow NYC subway riders. Her inspiration: a 1930s photo project by Walker Evans, in which he took photos of people he passed using a camera hidden under his coat. Sounds vaguely creepy, but the results are revealing of the "public-private" culture of the subway, as Davis puts it: "people feel they have the liberty to act as if they are in a private space even when they're out in public."
