Madison Square Garden's quest to renew its permit to operate an arena with more than 2,500 seats was ever-so-slightly derailed last night, when Community Board 5 recommended that the permit be denied unless the Garden adheres to a few small requests. CB5 wants it to limit signage, forgo its tax break, and not let Penn Station improvements go by the wayside in the name of arena renovations?though their demands might go nowhere, considering the decision ultimately rests with the City Council. MSG's certainly attracted a lot of haters recently, including New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman, who called it "a daily blight." [Commercial Observer; previously]
