Astoria residents are mobilizing to oppose an in-progress eight-story medical center with an 135-car garage that has overstepped its zoning limitations and, they claim, become a neighborhood hazard. The hospital's owner promised a 30-foot rear yard between the back of his building and the back of the buildings on adjacent 32nd Street, but has infringed on that gap by building out an extra 10 feet. People argue that the closer proximity of the building, which towers above the residential area, plus exhaust fumes from the parking garage, will lower property values and negatively affect the quality of life. They're pushing a letter-writing campaign to the Board of Standards & Appeals, and planning to give voice to their complaints at a hearing tomorrow in Lower Manhattan. [Queens Crap]
