Rent Rules

Roommates are a fact of life for many New Yorkers?the number of roommates in non-family households increased by more than 40 percent from 2000 to 2010. New York has some advice on dividing rooms, hunting for roommates beyond Craigslist, and, most interestingly, what share of the rent each roommate should pay based on apartment layout. Jonathan Miller's advice: decide rent amounts based on bedroom and closet square footage, and add small amounts for extras like en-suite bathrooms, fireplaces, and higher ceilings. [NYM]
