Monumental Delays

New, 12 comments

Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty have been closed since Hurricane Sandy, and officials now say that the monument can't be reopened until they figure out where to screen visitors. No one likes the white tent that has been used for security in Battery Park, and it was significantly damaged during the storm and will not be replaced. The National Parks Service wants to turn an empty Ellis Island building into security, but the NYPD is adamant that passengers be screened before they board ferries. This, plus expected budget cuts, mean there is no timeline for the islands to reopen. [Crain's; previously]
