Hint: A Beloved Market Shut Down Because of Conflict

Welcome to Cornerspotter, Curbed's game in which you try to identify the location and/or identity of a particular building or streetscape in a historic photograph. Impress us and your fellow Curbed readers with your uncanny insight into New York City and its past!

Taken in the first half of the 20th century, this photo shows what was once one of the world's largest markets. It started in the late 1800s, and it was active for nearly 60 years. The market ultimately closed because of a conflict (but probably not the type of conflict you're thinking about). Today the area is still active, but the market buildings are long gone. Can you name this market and its location? Bonus points if you can also name the architect.
