The contest to name a still-under-construction lawn near Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park has been called off after a grassroots movement to name it after late war photographer Chris Hondros. Hondros, who was killed in Libya in 2011, lived a few blocks from the park with his fiancee, and 200-plus people wrote in to the park's conservancy suggesting the new lawn honor his memory. The contest organizers, however, had originally envisioned the entrants using flowers, animals, historical facts, or something related to the view as inspiration. When Hondros's supporters showed their colors, though, they canceled the contest altogether and chalked it up to not explaining the rules clearly. [NYT, previously]
