Development Battles

New, 2 comments

To complete its $500 million upgrade, the National Tennis Center needed just one teensy sliver of Flushing Meadows Corona Park from the city, but because Major League Soccer wants to build an arena on parkland and Related wants a shopping center next to Citi Field, getting that 0.68 of an acre has been an uphill battle. "The park is under siege," said one resident who opposes the projects. "The Bloomberg administration has abandoned any plan to improve the park for its users and the surrounding community, and instead sees it as a development site to cement his legacy." City Council will vote on the Tennis Center's proposal this summer. [NYT; previously]
