Where Co-Op City now stands, there used to be an amusement park. Freedomland U.S.A. opened in 1960; its rides and attractions were based around American history and its 85-acre grounds were shaped sort of like the nation, too. The brainchild of aerospace engineer Cornelius Vanderbilt Wood, who was Disneyland's first employee, the whole operation imploded after only four years in business. Narratively's detailed account of this forgotten relic?written by a young man whose grandfather worked there as a costumed cowboy?is nontheless fascinating.
