Drivers, cyclists, and joggers beware: The Carroll Street Bridge, which spans the Gowanus Canal, will be closed from about April 1 onward for repairs. Department of Transportation work is expected to last for about four months. Despite its unglamorous location, we bet you didn't know it's actually the oldest of only four retractable bridges in the U.S. The crossing does date back to 1888, so it's probably about time it got shored up.
