The city's plan to replace Dumbo's iconic cobblestone streets with uniform, machine-cut stones has many neighborhood residents and preservationists wringing their hands in dismay. They needn't worry, though, as the Department of Transportation is here to reassure everyone that the new stones will totally have rounded edges. "They actually tumble them," says the DOT's assistant commissioner. "It imitates the effect of having trucks and coaches and other things rumble over your corners for years and years." See? Just like new—er, old. [NYT; photo by jenna bascom]
