Council member Gale Brewer is attempting to save one of three city schools slated for demolition by arguing that it could be worthy of landmark status. PS 199's West 70th Street site is currently earmarked for a new luxury residential highrise plus a replacement school. A blog and petition from unhappy parents and residents, as well as a bill and other efforts, preceded this move to stop the city's condo plan, but we're wondering if this rather unattractive-looking structure could ever pass muster with the LPC, even if it was designed by midcentury architect Edward Durell Stone. Perhaps Brewer is just trying to stall. [West Side Rag; previously]
