As the future of the sinking Pier 40 continues to be debated, the future of the lot across the street is becoming more clear. Currently occupied by a car wash, glass store, and strip club (just what everyone wants near a park!), the property at 357 West Street could be headed for a makeover lead by hotel/condo developer Ian Schrager (of Studio 54 fame). The Post reports that Schrager is currently in talks with site owner Richard Mack of Area Partners. Everyone declined to comment on the project, but confirmed the two were "working" together. The site is zoned for a structure of up to 89,000-square-feet, and it's not yet known if it will be condos or a hotel.
Schrager and Mack have worked together before on hotels in New York, Miami, and San Francisco. Schrager is currently busy fighting LES nimby Sperone Westwater Gallery to build a 350-foot-tall hotel at 215 Chrystie Street, and inviting people over to tour his penthouse at 40 Bond Street.
