When Robert Moses constructed the Shore Front Parkway along the Rockaway peninsula, it was meant to connect NYC to the Hamptons, but that never happened. The road is now only lightly used, and one Rockaway resident believes it could be transformed into a dune forest to protect the coastline from future Hurricane Sandys. Half of the parkway would be covered with dunes and a forest of pitch pine, which has an interlocking root system that would hold the beach in place. Supposedly the Parks Department even thinks it's a good idea. [Capital NY]
