Newsstands Making News

New, 9 comments

Cipriani Wall Street, a swanky event space for balls and fundraisers, has some major beef with the newsstand that's set to be installed in front of its doorway. Not only will it get in the way of red-carpet entrances and mar the Corinthian-columned vibe, but Community Board 1 members and others also argue that in light of the Boston bombings a newsstand would be an ideal hiding spot for an explosive targeting the city's gala-going glitterati. The city's 2008 plan to replace 300 grungy newspaper-candy-and-cigarette purveyors with new glass-and-steel structures has caused plenty of scuffles already, but this is perhaps the first time that the construction of one unit has resulted in a a velvet-rope cordon.
