Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy Nab $6.9M Downing St. Townhouse

New, 9 comments

Celebrity power couple Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy, it turns out, did not let go of their Soho loft last fall (for the tidy little sum of $5.85 million) without a gameplan for their future abode. Via a tip from The Real Estalker, we found out that just as the Soho sale hit the airwaves in November of 2012, the actors simultaneously purchased a four-story 4BR/4.5BA West Village townhouse for $6.876 million.

As it turns out, the seller is somewhat of a big name himself. According to public records, David Shaffer, a well-known psychiatrist who is also Anna Wintour's ex-husband, finally sold the house to Danes and Dancy after trying to offload it in 2008 and 2009 with a slightly higher ask. Either way, he turned a profit, having bought back in 1990 for just $1.7 million.

Originally built in the 1880s, the slender house has a Greek Revival facade and tons of outdoor space. The brokerbabble, courtesy of Elliman, exalts the "wonderful mantles, antique floor boards, and tin ceilings throughout the house. In addition there is outdoor space on 3 levels, a courtyard, a terrace off the library and a roof garden with charming Village roof top views." The listing also mentions that it's "perfect for family living"?ideal for Danes and Dancy, who just had a son in December. Buying a townhouse while eight months pregnant? Well-played, Danes. Well-played.
