It seems more and more likely that the city will move ahead with plans for a 30,000-seat Major League Soccer stadium in Flushing-Meadows Corona Park, despite the strong opposition from some community members and parks advocates. An new op-ed in the Daily News says that while the plans say the stadium would occupy 13 acres within the park, the "directly affected acreage [...] would be nearly double that." Because the proposed site sits atop the Flushing River, the stadium would be elevated, thus casting shadow over large swaths of nearby fields and causing stormwater runoff to pool in public areas.
