West 71st St. House with Controversial Addition Wants $15.9M

New, 18 comments

After converting it from a multi- to a single-family home, adding a rear extension, and tacking on a wildly incongruous two-story penthouse, the next step for the LLC that purchased 226 West 71st Street in 2011 for $5.175 million was, of course, to put it back on the market for $15.9 million. Inside the house, the renovation (which includes an elevator), courtesy of New York Design Architects, actually looks pretty good, not to mention large—there are now seven bedrooms and six and three half baths, as well as a garden, two terraces, and roof deck. It's only the exterior that looks like ... George Washington wearing a batting helmet or something. Maybe a coat of paint for the penthouse is in order?
