New York's most embattled arena might get its wish?a new lease on life, with no expiration date. Capital New York reports that the City Planning Commission is planning to offer Madison Square Garden a 15-year permit to operate with an option to extend it in perpetuity should MSG and make necessary improvements to the much-maligned Penn Station below. This means high-fives all around at the Dolan household; meanwhile, critics, preservationists, neighborhood leaders, and local politicians are doubtless planning their next line of attack. But, as Second Avenue Sagas points out, the most important priority is making life better and easier for commuters and travelers. If that doesn't involve an above-ground facelift, so be it.
