Crown Heights may be gentrifying like mad, but it also still retains a lot of appeal for artists. There was one group, which wanted to renovate a dilapidated Dean Street warehouse into a live-work space, and now there's a colorful colony of sorts led by Kellam Clark. His four-bedroom industrial enclave of creativity, which he redid on his own (with a bit of more than a bit of dumpster diving) over 13 years, is on Dean Street, too. Confusingly, it's also called Dean Street, attracting "dozens of transient musicians, writers and creative types who drift through its vast and varied spaces every day." Clark plans to enjoy his unusual home while it lasts; he's sure eviction lies ahead. [City Room]
