Security Measures

New, 7 comments

The National Parks Service recently announced that when the Statue of Liberty reopens on July 4th, the security screening will take place on Ellis Island. Pre-Sandy, the airport-like security occurred in white tents in Battery Park, and everything was wiped out during the storm. The Parks Service insists the new screening facility still ensures the safety of visitors, but NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Senator Chuck Schumer want people screened before they get on the boats. Kelly and Schumer want to rebuild the tent system, which was supposed to be temporary but has been in place since 9/11. [WSJ; previously]
