After a brief flirtation with selling their 88-year-old factory a few years back, Streit's Matzo decided to stay put and keep rolling out their unleavened Passover goodies. And now that filmmakers exceeded their $60,000 goal on Kickstarter today, the holdout will also be the subject of a documentary. The movie will center on the four red-brick tenement buildings at Rivington and Suffolk that have been the heart of the operation since 1925, producing 40 percent of the nation's matzah on machinery as old as the company itself. The filmmakers melodramatically extol the singularity of their subject: "In a neighborhood where the Jewish immigrants have long ago moved on... where manufacturing has left the cities if not the country... Streit's remains a Lower East Side institution." [Kickstarter via The Lo-Down; previously]
