31 Historic Photos Of Midtown West Before the Building Boom

New, 12 comments

With Hudson Yards underway, Midtown West is being transformed into a sea of glassy skyscrapers and urban green spaces?a far cry from the days when warehouses lined the streets and coal-chugging locomotives ran along the avenues. To celebrate this grittier past, we collected 31 historic photos, dating from the late 1800s to mid-1940s. The photos show Midtown West's 19th century country homes and bustling marketplaces morph into traffic-clogged "Death Avenues" that changed yet again with the West Side Improvement Project and construction of the original High Line.
