Area residents are flat-out rejecting Mayor Bloomberg's plan to rezone Midtown East. Community Board 5 will submit its formal (and we assume incredibly negative) review to the city on July 1, citing problems of overwhelming density from new office towers without enough infrastructure improvement or public measures to abate it. Though the community boards' role is solely advisory, their opinions can affect the votes of City Council members, who will ultimately vet the proposal later this year. Said one task force chair who reviewed the plan: "From the beginning the public benefits just did not measure up to the private benefits... The consideration of the public's needs was secondary to the interests of the real estate developers." [Crain's; previously]
