One reason why this is Hotels Week and not Hostels Week: 47 hostels closed in New York between 2010 and 2011, partially a result of the 2010 crackdown on illegal hotels and SROs. Hostels were never meant to fall under that legislation, however, so a proposed local law would create a new office for licensed hostels to help distinguish between hostels and illegal hotels. The law would also mandate that hostel beds can't be placed within three feet of each other. Bunk beds, though, would still be allowed. [Commercial Observer]
