Madison Square Garden may have finally lost its protracted battle to stay in its current spot above Penn Station. Two City Council committees voted today to renew the arena's permit to operate for only 10 years, keeping the door wiiiiiide open to the possibility that, after such time, it could relocate the arena in order to build a new transit hub. Contrast that with the 15 years recommended by the City Planning Commission and the infinity years the Garden wanted. The planning commission also included a loophole that would have allowed MSG to keep its permit in perpetuity if it collaborated with Penn's three railways on improvements; the council today eliminated that option. So does that mean we're getting one of these new Penn Stations? Well, no. There need to be many more rounds of voting first. But we're undeniably closer than we were last week. [Crain's; previously]
