Gowanus Concert Venue Haters Take Cause Direct to Video

The Rock & Roll Playhouse Impact from We Are Gowanus on Vimeo.

Neighborhood advocacy group We Are Gowanus formed last month to oppose the conversion of a warehouse at 280 Bond Street into a concert venue and bar called the Rock & Roll Playhouse. Backed by Peter Shapiro of Brooklyn Bowl, the Playhouse has billed itself as a place that will host small-scale love music shows as well as sell food and drink, plus inoffensive cultural and educational offerings like children's art classes by day. But one Carroll Gardens priest told the Post that Shapiro confessed to him that the Rock & Roll Playhouse will undeniably be a nightclub, while Shapiro is telling area residents it's not. Really!

The space abuts several backyards in a quiet neighborhood, worrying nearby tenants, who have not only exchanged letters with Shapiro and launched a petition that encourages officials to deny Shapiro a liquor license but also put together the (literally) sketchy video above. It depicts the music, chatter, general noise, crowds, and other obnoxious hazards that Shapiro's development could bring to the neighborhood?where right now, apparently, the only sounds to be heard are birds chirping.
