The world's tallest Ferris wheel moved another notch from rendering to reality last night, when the Land Use Committee of Staten Island's Community Board 1 gave the project?along with its adjacent outlet mall-hotel complex?a thumbs up. Despite some concerns that commuters and residents would be affected by increased traffic to the area, and amid pleas that jobs created should be meant for local union workers, the group approved the zoning changes required for the New York Wheel and Empire Outlets project to continue through the ULURP approval process. Members also suggested using revenue generated by the wheel to make myriad improvements within the borough, including increasing ferry service. [DNAinfo; previously]
