Collect Pond Park will reopen later this summer, giving Downtown denizens a new green oasis reminiscent of the area landscape some 400 years ago. When Native Americans lived on the land, the five-acre pond was 60-feet deep, but then colonialists came in and polluted the crap out of it. As the area developed, it became a breeding ground for crime, so the city plopped a jail on the site, hoping to transform the area. Interestingly, it was the fact that the site became a breeding ground of a different type that lead to the current restoration. [Broadsheet Daily; previously]
