Affordable Housing

In Jamaica, a plan to build a 53-unit housing project catering to grandparents raising children is moving forward. Organized by the Calvary Baptist Church and mainly subsidized through low-income housing tax credits, the project is meeting the demands of a gradually growing population of elderly people that raise children, often barred from senior housing and forced to live in small one-bedroom apartments. The project will also provide "free, on-site childcare, counseling, and handicap-accessible one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments." [NYDN]
