In the realm of cool urban ideas, developer SEF Industries is proposing that New York City get a floating power plant. The 79 megawatt plant, powered by natural gas, would be docked in the Wallabout Channel near the Brooklyn Navy Yard but could "rapidly move under its own propulsion" to areas with power outages, particularly important if those areas have hospitals or other critical facilities.
