Ahead of a crucial City Council vote Wednesday, tennis legend Billie Jean King comes out?surprise, surpise?in favor of expanding the tennis center that bears her name. The $500 million project has been under siege from the beginning, especially about the two-thirds of an acre of parkland the facility would eat up, even though it would hand a different acre and a half back to the city. "It's critical to understand," implores King, who learned to play in public parks. "The National Tennis Center is a public facility; it's not as though Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, all 900 acres of it, is giving away land to a private developer... Perhaps at some point, for some people, tennis was a country club sport. Not for me. And not for most New Yorkers." [NYDN; previously]
