See the Future of Governors Island, Now With More Hills

New, 10 comments

The Hills are alive on Governors Island, thanks to a $15 million donation by Google's Eric Schmidt (yes, that Eric Schmidt). Yesterday, ground broke on a new section of the park that will feature undulating hills, some 80-feet tall, that offer sweeping views of the harbor and city. The section needs $70 million for construction, and $36 million had been raised before Schmidt's donation. The Hills are part of the West 8-designed masterplan for Governors Island, and they should be open to the public by 2015. The first section?Hammock Grove, Liggett Terrace, and Play Lawn?is expected to open this fall.
