A legal battles rages at 31 Desbrosses Street, one of eight Manhattan buildings that have yet to be declared safe after Hurricane Sandy. The crux of the matter is that 31 Desbrosses is rent-stabilized and its owner, Ponte Equities, was not particularly committed to maintaining it even before the storm. Now, Ponte is claiming that making the necessary repairs would cost more than the building is worth, and the tenants have resorted to filing a lawsuit in an attempt to force the landlord to make it habitable again.
