After the loss of the historic Eagle Clothes sign, Gowanus residents were hoping to gain protected status for the neighborhood's other advertising-related landmark, the Kentile Floors sign. But the Landmarks Preservation Commission says it can't officially landmark signs, because "doing so would theoretically restrict how an owner may want to use the building, and the commission's regulatory jurisdiction does not extend to use." That means that iconic sign, although safe for the time being, may be in danger if the old factory ever changes hands. [DNAinfo; photo by Eric Konon; previously]
