Plopping a platform over rail yards is nothing new in this city?the sooty tracks leading to Grand Central were capped backed in 1902?but the methods for building new ground for skyscrapers is just a tad superior than that of a century ago. Related is already working on the platform of Hudson Yards, drilling "exploratory pits" so they know where to put the 300 watertight caissons (aka super strong supports) that will hold up the platform. The caissons weigh between 4 and 60 tons each, and starting in January, they will be sunk up to 80 feet below the rails. Easy peasy! [WSJ; previously]
