The story of Pier 57?and what to do with it?is a long one. Chelsea Now nicely captures its tumultuous history since World War II and how we got where we are today, which is a site for temporary art installations and pop-ups with an imminent future as a mall with shops and restaurants made up of shipping containers called Incuboxes. Construction on the Young Woo design is expected to begin in October, with an opening date of 2015, and advocates are adamant that it will revolutionize retail... because the rents will be lower: "The Incubox shopping space with the open shipping containers is going to be at much better rates versus other stores in the Meatpacking District... Leasing for those will also be different. It will be easier to put your foot in the door for just a couple of months." [Chelsea Now; previously]
