The East River is going to get a little more beachy. City Council speaker Christine Quinn and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer set aside $7 million for the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge Beach, a sandy stretch of the East River Blueway that will take three years to build. The 11,000-square-foot patch of sand will have a kayak launch, fishing spots, tree-lined paths, seating, and tidal wetlands. The only thing the beach won't have is swimming access, but who wants to swim in the East River anyway? [NYDN; previously]
