Republican mayoral hopeful Joe Lhota is the latest member of his party to support an $8 billion plan that would build or preserve 150,000 low-cost housing units. Put forth by the Housing First Coalition, the proposal requires shelling out $356 million more each year than the city currently has earmarked. Endorsing spending like this is pretty much a first for Republican candidates across the board?seeing as how primary foes John Catsimatidis and George McDonald have also backed the plan?but Lhota says it's the mayor's responsibility to support programs like these given cuts at the state and federal level.
