What about taking New York's 8,000 public telephone kiosks and replacing them with charging stations for electric vehicles set beside dedicated parking spots? That's one of the ideas that came out of a design contest for the future of these seemingly useless remnants of street furniture, and the city is seriously considering it, alongside features like Wi-Fi, touch screens, and solar panels. Critics contest that it devotes too many resources to cars, whose use shouldn't be encouraged, but it would take years before a mass conversion like this happens anyway.
